Ceramic Band Heater

A ceramic band heater is a high-temperature electric heating element designed to wrap around cylindrical surfaces such as barrels, pipes, and nozzles to provide uniform, controlled heat.

​They are widely used in plastic processing and industrial manufacturing due to their ability to reach significantly higher temperatures and conserve more energy than standard mica band heaters.

How It Is Constructed

  • Resistance Wire: A nickel-chromium (NiCr) resistance wire generates heat when an electrical current passes through it.
  • Ceramic Insulation: The heating wire is threaded through flexible, interlocking ceramic tiles (often steatite). These tiles electrically isolate the wire while radiating heat efficiently toward the cylinder.
  • Insulation Blanket: A layer of ceramic fiber insulation sits between the ceramic tiles and the outer metal shell, reducing heat loss into the surrounding air by up to 25% to 30%.
  • Outer Sheath: A corrosion-resistant stainless steel or aluminized steel outer casing clamps tightly around the equipment.

  • High Temperature Limits: Operates continuously at temperatures up to 760°C , compared to mica heaters which generally top out around 480°C .
  • Energy Efficiency: The built-in insulation layer lowers exterior sheath temperatures, cutting factory cooling loads and power consumption
  • Longer Lifespan: Because heat transfers via both conduction and radiation, they are less vulnerable to premature burnout caused by minor surface irregularities or loose fits.
  • Customization: Often manufactured with custom cutouts, holes for thermocouples, and various terminal types (leads, screw terminals, or plug receptacles).
